We Speak Pilates is a blog about classical Pilates, the system Joseph Pilates called Contrology.
I’m Cassandra Palo. I’ve taught the classical method for 20 years and I own NICE Pilates, a studio on a corner of San Francisco’s Richmond district that maxes out at 5 per class with no mirrors and only enough instrumental background music to drown out the sounds of the city. I work from primary source materials and with my own discipline. I do not opine on anyone else’s experience. Pilates is a solo sport.
The essays here are my musings about how the method works: the order, the apparatuses, the 6 Principles, and what 10,000 repetitions teach you that instruction can’t. Each entry closes with Tales from the Studio, a true story from the work.
If you’re in San Francisco, come do the work in person at NICE Pilates. If you’re anywhere else, read on. The system travels.
